HAVERFORDWEST MALE VOICE CHOIR

Haverfordwest Male Voice Choir was formed in 1896 and performed its first concert at the town's Shire Hall on the 27th March of that year. On the same day, in 1996, the Choir again performed at the Shire Hall to begin their Centenary celebrations.

The Choir has performed at many prestigious concert halls in England, Wales and has toured Dublin, Galway, Draveil in France and Haverfordwest's twin town, Oberkirch in Germany whose band members are now close friends of the Choristers. The Choir has also toured Hong Kong in 1992, Kentucky in 1996 and Easter Canada in 2001. Whilst they were in Canada, the attack on the World Trade Centre took place on 11th September, and on that day, the Choir sang at the Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, which was very moving. In 2000, the choir made its fifth appearance at the Royal Albert Hall in London with other choirs from around South Wales and England as part of the Millennium celebrations by the Welsh Association of Male Choirs.

In 1999, the Choir were pleased to take part in the celebrations of the 10th Anniversary of the twinning of Oberkirch and Haverfordwest. The Choir visited Oberkirch in April of that year and in July, a large delegation from Oberkirch made a return visit. Also in July of that year, the Choir had the pleasure and privilege of a visit from the Moscow State University Academic Choir, which was touring the UK after competing in the Llangollen Eisteddfod. Also in that year, the Choir took part, with other choirs, in the opening ceremony of the Rugbu World Cup at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff, and the following year had the privilege of singing at the Wales/Scotland match at the same stadium.

Since then, the Choir has visited Ireland, Lingen in Germany, when they took part in a festival with seven other choirs from Europe to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Lingener Mannerquartett and Belfast, when they took part in a joint concert with Queen's Island Victoria and Bryncoch Male Choirs. In 2002, for the first time, the Choir competed in the National Eisteddfod at St. David's and were runners up in their category.

ACCOMPANIST - Wendy Mary Lewis A.L.C.M (See Photo)

Wendy Lewis was appointed our accompanist in 1991, where she relentlessly undertakes that unenviable task of repetitively beating out notes during rehearsal, as well as providing the skilful accompaniment in concert. Wendy started her education at Blaenffos C P School and continued at Ysgol y Preseli, Crymych. She then went on to Trinity College, Carmarthen where she studied music as her advanced main subject. Wendy later returned to Blaenffos School as a head teacher for over 20 years, but has now retired from her teaching post, and now relishes her new-found freedom to pursue many varied interests. Wendy also takes an active part in community life, undertaking official roles in local committees and functions, and is accompanist for the local Urdd competitions. In addition to giving piano tuition, she is organist, Sunday School teacher and deaconess at her local chapel, and has been an organist at the North Pembrokeshire Baptist singing festivals for over 36 years. She also accompanies the local party 'Bois y Frenni', the Cwm Gwaun duo, Lilwen and Gwenda, and numerous other local soloists. She is the County Secretary for the Welsh Movement, 'Merched y Wawr' and was Secretary of the North Pembrokeshire Young Baptists Association for 15 years, and for 28 years was the accompanist of the Crymych and District Mixed Choir.

DEPUTY ACCOMPANIST - Carys Ann Evans.

In September 2003, Carys joined the musical team of the Choir as deputy accompanist and brought a gust of youthful fresh air into the practice room. Carys began her musical career whilst a pupil at Fishguard Junior School by studying the harp and piano. After successfully completing a HND course in Business Administration at the Pembrokeshire College, Carys worked for the National Farmers Union, but has recently taken up the position of Regional Development Officer for Pembrokeshire with Menter a Busnes, an organisation helping young people have a taste of running their own business. The harp has taken Carys to various parts of Wales from east to west, playing at weddings, concerts and private functions, to being the resident harpist at the renown Celtic Corned in Nolton, here in Pembrokeshire. She also assists with the Urdd Eisteddfodau, accompanying Cerdd Dant competitions. In 2004, Carys received the honour of being admitted to the National Eisteddfod of Wales 'Gorsedd Y Beirdd', where she is known as 'Teleynores Gwaun'.
